You do tend to view things like hearings at the most powerful bodies in your society as somehow important, but having reviewed what happened at the hearing at Senate Committee on Commerce, yesterday, you have to wonder what the point was.
Let’s hope the second one, starting now, is a little better.

ICANN Senate hearing

There is a hearing going on in the US [tag]Senate[/tag] as I write this, but I’m having terrible trouble getting the audio feed to work.
I have also missed big chunks of it because I was in Southampton this morning meeting, among others, Tim [tag]Berners-Lee[/tag], Danny [tag]Weitzner[/tag], Wendy [tag]Hall [/tag] and Nigel [tag]Shadbolt[/tag] – basically [...]

It’s amazing what happens when you start being nice to people.
[tag]ICANN[/tag] has just been given a far cheque for $190,000 from – get this – a number of [tag]CENTR[/tag] members i.e. the people that run Europe’s country-code top level domains, for helping them make their lives easier.

The door on the super-secret [tag]ICANN[/tag] Nominating Committee has opened just a crack with the release of the most basic information on the candidates that had put themselves forward.
Here are some personal reflections on why the Internet community now needs to stick its foot in the door of the [tag]NomCom[/tag].

There is something seriously wrong with 123-Reg – previously the best domain purchasing company in the UK.
Today, I have moved my JaysonBlair.com domain and hosting deal from them for the simple reason that… the website had completely disappeared! The hosting deal must have come to an end and yet somewhere, somehow it fell through the [...]

With my book out the way, I now have lots more time to, er, read books. And one of those near the top of the pile was Who controls the [tag]Internet[/tag]? by Jack [tag]Goldsmith[/tag] and Tim [tag]Wu[/tag]. The book has frequently cropped up in conversations with various Net people since it was published in March, [...]

I’ve been reading with some interest and amusement the battle going on between ex-MI6 officer Richard Tomlinson living in France and the British secret services.
The latest twist is that he’s started posting parts of his novel on the Net because MI6 has told him it is withholding his computers as the novel breaches the Official [...]

The super-secret [tag]ICANN[/tag] Nominating Committee is meeting secretly in Frankfurt this weekend to decide who will fill various positions within the Internet overseeing organisation, including three members of the ICANN Board of Directors, one member of the [tag]GNSO[/tag], one member of the [tag]ccNSO[/tag], and two members of the [tag]ALAC[/tag].
[tag]NomCom[/tag] chairman George Sadowsky outlined the process [...]

I have grown infuriated again with the news wire service that is the main source of news for my job as news editor with Techworld.com. A huge amount of the information on it is simply unusable, but I still have to read it all to make sure there isn’t a gem in there.
Just a second [...]

Something for the geeks out there

I’ve just been pointed to a cracking little story on ZDNet. It was the anniversary of 50 years of the hard disk yesterday. So someone at ZD decided to do a rewrite of a famous Monty Python sketch in honour.
Unless you know the sketch and unless you are a bit of a geek, you will [...]
