Are the ICANN Senate hearings just a waste of time?
3 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism, WSIS, ICANN You do tend to view things like hearings at the most powerful bodies in your society as somehow important, but having reviewed what happened at the hearing at Senate Committee on Commerce, yesterday, you have to wonder what the point was.
Let’s hope the second one, starting now, is a little better.
The title of the […]
ICANN Senate hearing
1 Comment Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism, Technology, ICANN There is a hearing going on in the US Senate as I write this, but I’m having terrible trouble getting the audio feed to work.
I have also missed big chunks of it because I was in Southampton this morning meeting, among others, Tim Berners-Lee, Danny Weitzner, Wendy Hall and Nigel Shadbolt - […]
ICANN given $190,000 aid for IANA
4 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism, ICANN It’s amazing what happens when you start being nice to people.
ICANN has just been given a far cheque for $190,000 from - get this - a number of CENTR members i.e. the people that run Europe’s country-code top level domains, for helping them make their lives easier.
There are 10 countries behind it: most significantly […]
Door of ICANN secrecy opens a crack
2 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism, ICANN The door on the super-secret ICANN Nominating Committee has opened just a crack with the release of the most basic information on the candidates that had put themselves forward.
Here are some personal reflections on why the Internet community now needs to stick its foot in the door of the NomCom.
The final decisions were made […]
What the hell is wrong with 123-Reg?
85 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism There is something seriously wrong with 123-Reg - previously the best domain purchasing company in the UK.
Today, I have moved my JaysonBlair.com domain and hosting deal from them for the simple reason that… the website had completely disappeared! The hosting deal must have come to an end and yet somewhere, somehow it fell through […]
Who controls the Internet? A book review
7 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism, Technology, WSIS, ICANNWith my book out the way, I now have lots more time to, er, read books. And one of those near the top of the pile was Who controls the Internet? by Jack Goldsmith and Tim Wu. The book has frequently cropped up in conversations with various Net people since it was published in […]
Ex-MI6 officer starts posting spy novel on Net
3 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism I’ve been reading with some interest and amusement the battle going on between ex-MI6 officer Richard Tomlinson living in France and the British secret services.
The latest twist is that he’s started posting parts of his novel on the Net because MI6 has told him it is withholding his computers as the novel breaches the […]
New ICANN Board members decided this weekend
2 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Internet, Journalism, WSIS, ICANN The super-secret ICANN Nominating Committee is meeting secretly in Frankfurt this weekend to decide who will fill various positions within the Internet overseeing organisation, including three members of the ICANN Board of Directors, one member of the GNSO, one member of the ccNSO, and two members of the ALAC.
NomCom chairman George Sadowsky outlined the […]
Welcome to your daily tranquiliser of news
6 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Journalism I have grown infuriated again with the news wire service that is the main source of news for my job as news editor with Techworld.com. A huge amount of the information on it is simply unusable, but I still have to read it all to make sure there isn’t a gem in there.
Just a […]
Something for the geeks out there
0 Comments Published by Kieren 1 year, 11 months ago in Funny, Technology I’ve just been pointed to a cracking little story on ZDNet. It was the anniversary of 50 years of the hard disk yesterday. So someone at ZD decided to do a rewrite of a famous Monty Python sketch in honour.
Unless you know the sketch and unless you are a bit of a geek, you […]
