IGF: The *real* story

You’ve seen the show, read the reviews, bought the T-shirt, but now it’s time to reveal the *real* Internet Governance Forum, the kind of IGF that only photographs with pleasingly childish captions can provide…

The two special guests (aside from the Greek PM and EC rottweiler Viviane Reding) at the inaugural Internet Governance Forum were […]

I was at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Athens last week taking pictures, among other things. I have finally been through all the snaps and have posted a few below amid a quick rundown of events.

The remainder can be found at my IGF photo gallery/archive at kierenmccarthy.co.uk/photos/igf/. If anyone has any questions or […]

Amnesty International delivered a petition of 50,000 names to United National special assistant Nitin Desai on the last day of the Internet Governance Forum today.

The handover was part pledge and part promotion of the human rights organisation’s Irrepresible campaign.
The pledge to which the signatories had signed up online read: “I believe the Internet should […]

Some amusement in the Internet Governance Forum here on the last day as a government representative from Lithuania offering to host the IGF in 2010, was followed immediately by a government official from Azerbaijan who - yes - stated that the Government of Azerbaijan would like to offer to host the IGF in 2010.
Nitin […]

IGF: The gossip issue

I got some good advice once. It was: “Make sure you never take yourself too seriously.” That has stuck with me despite - perhaps because of - the fact that it was delivered by an old French drunk sitting on a Paris bench facing a lit-up Notre Dame over the Seine at 2am.

The Greeks drove me to it. Last night, under the cover of conference quietness, I sneaked into the Apollon hotel store room and stole a waiter uniform. I’m not proud of it, but I am proudly wearing it today one for simple reason - I want my own coffee and water, and I don’t […]

You reach a certain level of frustration and then, suddenly, you relax. The struggle becomes impossible and then you realise that, ultimately, it’s not that important. You’re still breathing air, you still have legs, this will come to an end.
What on earth am I talking about? The mild insanity of hosting a global, revolutionary Internet […]

I don’t know how it happened but Vint Cerf’s on his feet, Paul Twomey is being pulled into the conversation and despite a panel of 16 people, all pretty much determined not talk about ICANN, we are talking about, yes, ICANN.
I’ve not been able to get a feel for how this first session of […]

I feared as much: the heavy CPU demand of the IGF2006.info site - interaction comes with a cost - has left the hosting deal I bought for it struggling.
After falling over twice already today, a very helpful but somewhat sceptical Chengetai Masango from the UN Secretariat has agreed to let us host it on […]

First snaps from the IGF

I strolled to the Divani Apollon - location of the IGF - this morning, taking in the coastal path. A lovely walk of 20 minutes.

The Saronic coast - for it is she - is lovely this time of year. Warm but not too hot, breezy but not uncomfortable. Athens in October comes highly recommended.

I […]
