Boat and bridge

One of my favourite photos of Porto - the traditional port boat in the foreground, looking down the river to the Atlantic Ocean with another of the city's incredible bridges visible in the background.

Sandeman

This is the sign on top of the Sandeman building - a famous brand of port named after some English fella. My dad, when he was a kid, used to think the silhouetted man with a glass of port was a shadowy figure and called him “the murderer”. Sandeman tastes lovely btw.

Porto architecture

A good shot of the variations in Porto buildings. The large cathedral and city walls at the top, with ramshackle yet charming building underneath. Extraordinary place.

Porto cafes

A view across the river to the main cafe area of town

Porto vista

Another shot of the Porto landscape. In the background at the back is the main symbol/landmark of Porto - the Tower of Clerigos.

Porto landcape

And here you can see the same houses as earlier but looking out across one side of town. Incredibly higgledy-piggledy. I like it.

Porto houses

You get a real sense of how houses are cramped together. It's quite strange that such poor housing is so close to enormous public monuments. And the very tall, very thin houses are a common style. I would like to live at the top of em. Especially when Porto is on such an incline […]

No, nothing to do with the United States. Rather 1800s sometime when Portugal managed to beat Napoleon's forces in the Peninsular War. I like it. The base has scenes of tough fighting. It's a great piece of public sculpture and can be found at the Boavista roundabout - called simply “the roundabout” by locals. […]

A few more of the barges with Eiffel's bridge - one of six crossing Porto in the background.

We're on the south bank here - where the port places are - looking over the river to the cafe area of main Porto. The boat is the traditional boat used to transport barrels of port from the vineyards miles inland to Porto where they were stored and aged. These days trucks and roads […]
